Dear fellow Long Island interns and
business leaders,
"There's nothing to do on Long Island"
is the phrase I hear most from Long Island students. Internships are commonly
used to combat this feeling and they do provide a great way to see how dynamic
the Long Island business community is. After all, the Island has a vibrant
economy and is overflowing with smart young people. Still, internships only
provide half the picture. We've identified three main ways Internship PLUS will
paint the whole picture for interns: Yellow screen of Death.
-
Completing experience:
Students in internships only see what goes on inside the office. Much of
business takes place outside the office, during breakfast meetings, lunches and
after-hours events. Internship PLUS provides an opportunity to see how
professionals interact outside the office through our networking events
featuring speakers.

-
Long Island brain drain:
Young native Long Islanders are infamous for leaving the Island to go to
college and never coming back after graduation. Our heavy investment in high
school education is not yielding a full return for our own community. The
reasons are obvious: costs to live on Long Island are high and the rewards
don't appear to outweigh those costs. For students, time during a summer
internship is critical to forming an opinion of what life after college would
be like on Long Island. Interns in big cities such as New York City and D.C.
are exposed to an active social scene for interns through many commercial
venues and large employers that provide a place to congregate. Long Island
offers few such options since it covers a larger area and has many small
businesses. Internship PLUS seeks to focus on this problem and provide
opportunities for interns to network on Long Island.
-
Clueing in interns: Students
hired by companies may be great students and well organized, but likely do not
have much business savvy or knowledge of the Long Island economy. It is
shocking how many native Long Island students do not know what Computer
Associates or Symbol Technologies does, who their county executive or
Congressman is, and how to network in a professional environment. These
understandable omissions will hinder performance and leave businesses less
benefit for their investment in interns. Internship PLUS addresses these issues
and strengthens the intern's effectiveness.
We're geared up for a great summer of
discovery, networking and simply kicking back after work to have a great
time.
Looking forward to meeting you,
Greg Galant President Young
Professionals Chamber of Commerce
